GREENVILLE, Texas -- A police officer was killed and a suspect wounded during a shooting in North Texas, police said Tuesday. Police Chief Chris Smith said Officer Cooper Dawson died in a hospital following the shooting Monday night in Greenville, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) northeast of Dallas.

A police officer and a suspect were shot and were sent to a hospital, according to the Greenville Police Department. The officer has died.

Officer Cooper Dawson was conducting a traffic stop around 7:40 p.m. that led to a foot pursuit near 3500 Pickett Street. While pursuing the suspect, Dawson was ambushed and shot multiple times, police said.
