Millions of people were digging out from a severe lake effect snowstorm in parts of the Northeast and Midwest that dumped up to five feet of snow. NBC News' Erin McLaughlin reports that even more snow is on the way.

Lake-effect snow blowing in from the Great Lakes has blanketed parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, stranding hundreds of vehicles on roads and snarling post-Thanksgiving travel. Well over two feet of snow had fallen in many parts of the region by early Monday,

Lake-effect snow buried northern parts of the U.S. over the weekend, bringing below-freezing temperatures. Much of Ohio experienced several inches of snowfall, leading to snow warnings across the region.

The National Weather Service said "travel could be difficult to impossible" in places where snowfall is forecast to continue into the beginning of the week.

New York State Troopers say they rescued a woman who was stranded in a snowstorm over the weekend as she was on her way to get a heart transplant.
