Nearly 700,000 women are to be recruited to take part in an NHS artificial intelligence (AI) breast cancer screening trial in England.Five different AI platforms will be tested across 30 sites from April to see if the technology can speed up diagnosis as well as free up radiologists.

Cancer detection rates were 6·4 per 1,000 screened in the group that underwent mammography with AI use compared to five per 1,000 in the control group.

New research results now published from Lund University's MASAI trial are even better than the initial findings from last year: AI-supported breast screening detected 29% more cases of cancer compared with traditional screening.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UK, with one in seven women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

NIHR chief executive and Department of Health and Social Care chief scientific adviser, Professor Lucy Chappell, said: “This landmark trial could lead to a significant step forward in the early detection of breast cancer, offering women faster, more accurate diagnoses when it matters most.”

AI tools like the ones being tested in the EDITH trial could help facilitate the screening process, allowing the NHS to manage its resources better. With around 2.1 million mammogram screenings carried out annually, AI could significantly reduce the time required for each screening, making the system more efficient.

The NHS is launching the world's biggest trial of AI to detect breast cancer, screening two-thirds of 700,000 women. Five different types of AI will read about 462,000 mammograms at 30 breast cancer screenings later. The other 238,000 will be read in the usual way by two radiologists.
