Cocoa High's metal detectors, installed this school year, caught a handgun in the possession of a student Monday morning. "The weapon was immediately confiscated, and the student was placed into police custody," said Cocoa High Principal Denise Stewart in an email sent to parents Monday morning at about 9:54 a.m.

School leaders are crediting new technology with possibly preventing a tragedy at Cocoa High School on Monday. At 8:30 a.m., a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody at Cocoa High School. He is facing felony charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds.
