Speculations were circulating on social media that Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol would be appointed Maharashtra's next Chief Minister by the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead of Devendra Fadnavis.

On Wednesday, Eknath Shinde, who resigned as Chief Minister on Tuesday but remains the caretaker CM, stated that he left the decision to decide the next Maharashtra Chief Minister to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership.

Speaking to reporters, Shirsat said, "Yesterday, leaders from Maharashtra met at the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will make the final decision regarding the new Chief Minister.

The next Chief Minister of Maharashtra will be from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and s/he will be backed by two Deputy Chief Ministers, drawn, most likely, from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and that of Ajit Pawar's NCP.

Shinde resigned as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, days after Mahayuti's historic victory in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. The term of the current assembly ended on November 26. The announcement of Maharashtra's next Chief Minister has been delayed after the Mahayuti alliance emerged victorious in the state assembly elections.
