President Volodymyr Zelensky has outlined a natural resources deal between Ukraine and the United States, but stressed that the deal is a “framework” for future agreements and that a lot rests on talks with US President Donald Trump expected later this week.

President Trump confirmed on Wednesday that the U.S. and Ukraine have reached a minerals deal and that he still expects Ukrainian President Voldoymyr Zelensky to visit the White House on Friday. Comments from Zelensky earlier on Wednesday had seemed to put the deal and the visit in doubt.

The agreed upon framework deal is a preliminary step toward a comprehensive agreement that will be subject to ratification by Ukraine’s parliament.

Without confirming an agreement had been reached, the US president said in return for the deal Ukraine would get "the right to fight on".
