The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Chatham County through Noon, on Wednesday, Jan. 22. From Tuesday night through possibly Thursday morning, the service is calling for a mix of snow and freezing rain in the Savannah area,

The heaviest snowfall in the Sunshine State occurred around Pensacola, where spotters reported measuring amounts of 5 to 12 inches through Tuesday evening. Due to the hazardous weather and a series of crashes, a nearly 70-mile stretch of Interstate 10 was shut down by the Florida Highway Patrol.

DeSantis adopted President Donald Trump's "Gulf of America" moniker in Tuesday's emergency declaration over the winter storm warning in effect across Northeast Florida. The declaration, officially titled Executive Order Number 25-13 (Emergency Management-Gulf Winter Weather System), mentions the name within the first paragraph.

This move comes just hours after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a State of Emergency for the Florida Panhandle.

More than a dozen counties are under a state of emergency as areas of upstate New York could receive multiple feet of snow.

Snow covered the white-sand beaches of normally sunny vacation spots, including Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Pensacola Beach, Florida. The heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain hitting parts of the Deep South came as a blast of Arctic air plunged much of the Midwest and the eastern U.S. into a deep freeze.

Most government agencies were closed Monday for the holiday and Tuesday for the weather, but some are extending their closures.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Parched Southern California was forecast to face more dangerous winds on Wednesday but could get some badly needed rain this weekend, dampening the prospects of another round of deadly wildfires though even a small amount of precipitation could could create new challenges like toxic ash runoff.

Dangerous below-freezing temperatures with even colder wind chills were also expected to last over much of the week in the region. Authorities say three people have died in the cold weather.
